An Evening to Remember

It had been one month earlier when Roberto had first discovered that a Wi-Fi network was available in his house. Protected, but with a nice strong signal.

He had just moved to Oakville, had yet to find the time to sign a contract with an internet provider. Because he was on the internet all day at work, and on his mobile phone, having internet at home had not been a high priority for him.

But well, what the heck? Why not get the chance to brush up on his network hacking knowledge, having rarely used it since the time when he was a promising young student of computer science at the university?

He checked out the network protection type: WEP. Yes! Those were the easiest to hack. That algorithm had been considered unbreakable a few years earlier, but even today many people use it without knowing its weak spots.

This was not even hacking: there were so many tools, available online, for achieving his objective! He downloaded one and began the cracking procedure. Half an hour later, there it was, his new Wi-Fi internet access.

Roberto took advantage of the situation for several weeks. Then, feeling a little guilty, he began wondering just who the heck he was stealing bandwidth from. He had always been a curious man and, out of curiosity, he decided to try to find out. That’s how it all began.

He looked out the window, considering possible Wi-Fi users in his neighbourhood.

In the house on the other side of the street lived an old couple. They probably didn’t even use the internet. A single man with three dogs lived in the house barely visible on the left. He could be the one, but spent so much time out with his dogs, he seemed unlikely. In the big brown house on the right lived a family with at least four people. Three usually emerged from a black Kia Soul around 5:00 pm: a pretty woman, a boy around four or five, and a baby - a girl as deduced from the pink colour of her clothes; followed next by a man, probably the woman's husband, who left for work early and came home late in a classy Mercedes. They could be the users, but he wanted to find out and so he did something his voyeuristic side was probably hoping he would do: he installed software to spy on the internet traffic on the network and waited.

With no friends, no pets, lots of free time and beer in the fridge, he spent a few hours each evening analysing megabytes and megabytes of data; visited websites, viewed chats, e-mails, and pictures. All were saved on his external storage server, and as he got to know the people he was spying on, he knew where to find the interesting stuff.

Roberto found it out like that. The first e-mail thread: a girl was sending flirtatious e-mails to her lover, writing about how much she wanted to be caressed by another man and simply revisit those slight tingling sensations she had once felt with her husband.
